Brand Background

Growing up, music was everywhere, but that’s not the reason why I love it. Growing up in the bush in Jamaica, the way I was able to access the world around me was through the music, all genres, from different countries, covering different themes and topics.  Being able to sing these songs word-for-word, with the same melodies and smoothness was never of interest, neither was being able to build riddims, or pen lyrics.

The lyrics however was important, but at the time, I didn’t know why; I had no idea what the fascination was. That was until I started to read leisurely and realised that the key to a good book was not just in the storytelling, but the control the author has of the language.  That same principle was applicable to music lyrics.  That changed everything.  It determined who my favourite artistes were, the genres I enjoyed the most, and, most importantly, my desire to be a collector of the art form.

I was never interested in other cultures, because I was too fascinated by my own.  Everything about the Jamaican way of life, as you will see, is captivating.  This fascination grew when I decided to not only live the culture, but also to study it.Then came my encounter with the underpinnings and foundations of my language, Jamaican Creole, known to you as Patwa.  I became enamoured with the complexities and capabilities of the language, which helped me to understand the history of the country and region I live in.
